The Cambridge's Undertake a Full Day of Engagements in Canberra

William and Kate started the day by planting an English oak tree at the National Arboretum amid lush terraced hills and forests overlooking Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin.

They were helped with the planting by young twins, Sebastian Lye, who has Down Syndrome, and his brother Oliver.

The second engagement of the day for the young royal couple was a reception at Australia Parliament House in Canberra.

They were met by Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his wife, Margie Abbott and presented to senior politicians including Speaker Bronwyn Bishop, Senate President John Hogg and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

Other attendees included members of Australia's House of Representatives and Senate, diplomats, and members of the armed forces, as well as prominent Australians, including Lord Of The Rings actor David Wenham and former cricketer Glenn McGrath.

Before leaving Parliament House, the Duke and Duchess signed the parliamentary guestbook and then headed to the National Portrait Gallery, for their final public appearance of the day.

After Kate received flowers from three year-old Wilameena, the royal couple were met by National Portrait Gallery of Australia Chairman Dr. Helen Nugent AO and gallery director Angus Trumble. They then toured the gallery and met artists who have produced some of the gallery's most celebrated works.
